Ottawa Mini Maker Faire 2014

Well R2-C2 and I were at the Ottawa Mini Maker Faire this past weekend with some friends and their droids. When one of the builders told me that I had been neglecting this blog.

Well to start off, we had a BLAST!

Fred, a fellow builder from Montreal and good friend had been invited to the faire and asked me if I wanted to help. Of course I jumped on the opportunity.

As the faire was approching, we got invited to be on the news.

First was CTV Morning Live.

This would mark R2-C2‘s first time on TV. Since Fred was still in Montreal, Jason and I got up way early to make it to the studio. We had a blast, his R2 is complete, so we had him driving around during different segments.

Unfortunately I had to head back to work, but Jason went to the Museum of Science and Technology, where the faire was to take place and did an interview with CBC. On their segment, they mentioned how R2 would sure be the star of the Faire. They certainly weren’t kidding.

The next morning I got up early again, and headed to the museum. I met up with Jason and we started to set up our area.

Our Table

Our Table

After a few, Fred arrived with R2-T54 from Montreal. At this point even some of the other Makers were gathering around us.

The day progressed with hundreds if not actually thousands of people stopping by (they did get over 3000 guests go through). At first it was someone intimidating… you had these people WAY smarter than me, who knows way more about electronics and programming, including some NRC engineers stop by and ask questions. After a while it started to go back to the same questions over and over. Which wasn’t so bad.

This is pretty much what our table looked like all day.

One cool thing, was that our friends at The League of Super Heroes were at the museum for a photo shoot, so they stopped by which caused more traffic.

Then the CTV crew came by and wanted to shoot part of the news there.

They ended up doing several takes… cause R2-T54 was being a bit of a pain 🙂

But we looked pretty good on the news!

After all the fun, we plugged the droids in and headed to the after party.

I must say they went all out… open bar, lots of food, it was pretty cool.

After Party

After Party

We were in between the old locomotives, with a DJ playing. We had to cut the festivities short as some of our friends wanted a chance to hang out with Fred as well, so we headed to a restaurant down in the market and partied the rest of the evening away.

Day 2

Fred and I left my place and headed back to the museum. Unfortunately, Jason and R2-D2 weren’t joining us today. But Rob was still with us and man was he a god send.

We get to our table and R2-T54 has barely no charge! It seems that they neglected to tell us that the power in that room is cut over night. So Fred frantically tried to charge him.

The day progressed and it seemed a bit more quiet. Possibly because we didn’t have 2 droids running around. After noon, Derek, a fellow 501st member showed up as Vader and hung out with us. We wandered around the museum taking photos. It was a fun day.

Finally the day ended and Fred and R2-T54 had to leave 🙁
